Shruti
Sound yoga circles for emerging and seasoned trans+ teachers, and the communities they serve.
Overview
We are a community for trans+ people to navigate life's ups and downs, through ancient sound yoga traditions. We are volunteer-led and built by trans+ folks, for trans+ folks.
Many spiritual traditions have erased the history and voices of trans+ people. Shruti is a sacred sanctuary where we can remember and reclaim our ancient voice.
We host live online workshops and events by emerging and seasoned trans+ artists, healers and teachers. We end each event with some group singing through sacred nāda yoga practices.
All of our group offerings are by donation.
We believe the divine is something to be experienced and realised - not followed through religious dogma.
Sacred sound, voice and music are paths through which community members can remember their own divinity.
5 Elements Programming
Earth: Ground Your Nervous System With Trans+ Yoga Nidra
We offer yoga nidra with trans+ mythology, stories and visioning exercises, to help you dream up a new earth.
Yoga Nidra (the yoga of sleep) involves no physical movement, simply resting and listening. It is a meditative state of being that anyone can access - a 45-minute session has the same impact as 3-4 hour long nap!
Air: Peer Sharing Circles
Join small sharing circles (max. 6-8 people) where we delve in to topics such as grief, beauty, sexuality, self-identity, and more. Especially helpful for those who want time and space to process emotions with their peers.
Water: Voice Activation Singing Circles
A chance to celebrate with community as we host live singing circles.
Expect vocal warm-ups, a brief wisdom session, open mic for people to share their own sound art, and a closing kirtan (call-and-response style singing) to vibrate as one community.
Fire: Express your voice
The Shruti app allows members to receive and share original comedy from emerging trans+ comedians, as well as express their own voice art (coming soon!)
Ether: Applied Improv for Voice (Sliding Scale Fee)
Beginner-friendly applied improv coaching to help you navigate uncertainty and change with more ease, flow and laughter.

"Shruti was born out of a desire to see trans+ people reconnect with our shared spiritual histories.”
Shay (they/them), co-founder of Shruti
Shay (they/them) the founder of the Shruti Collective in Vrindavan, India where Sri Radha (the divine feminine) and Sri Krishna (the divine masculine) spent their childhood years together causing mischief.
Origin Story
“Shruti was born out of a desire to see trans+ people reconnect with our shared spiritual histories.
In India, I noticed Kinnar/Hijra (third gender) people sitting outside or away from the temple grounds, and found myself wondering why they weren't going inside.
I don’t believe in God/creator/the divine as dogma (organised religion), but the divine as something that is to be realised and experienced. For trans+ people struggling with understanding their path ahead, that can start by simply looking in the mirror and recognising your own divinity.
Devotional singing has shaped my gender identity and expression. It connects me with my ancestors, opens space for future visioning, and grounds my nervous system in the present moment.
I sing not to perform or sound good to others, but to remember that I am divine within, regardless of what the outside world may say.
My clothing choices and self-adornment are work-in-progress but I know they represent an expression of the divine. Trans+ people are powerful because we realise we are not our bodies but are divine souls - and we express how our souls want us to express.”
Rooted In Yoga Wisdom
Our work is informed by ancient yoga traditions including Bhakti (loving devotion), Karma (selfless action) and Nāda yoga (sound).
